Michael Nelson and Peter DeWitt created a monthly hybrid approach to professional development for school districts and organizations that is both innovative and impactful. Their model blends the benefits of collaborative inquiry with the flexibility of a hybrid learning environment, creating a safe space for leaders and teachers to thrive and grow.
They kick-off the relationship with a webinar or in-person event. However, before the event takes place they have sent a welcome letter to all participants with a Google intake form asking the participants specific questions about their learning needs.
Each month, leaders are asked to focus on a singular priority derived from their academic or strategic plans that are also tied to student outcomes. This approach ensures that learning is not only relevant but also deeply integrated into the fabric of their professional practice. Michael and Peter facilitate this process by curating content that resonates with the unique priorities of the group, thereby fostering a learning community that is both diverse and unified in its objectives.
At the ILC, we believe that learning isn’t just about the content, but it’s about how we come together as well. In every session, regardless of whether it is virtual or in-person, they create a psychologically safe space for leaders to learn together in a non-judgmental space. For more information on that, please read this guest blog by Mike (Education Week).
What sets Michael and Peter’s approach apart is their use of carefully selected protocols designed to maximize processing time. This thoughtful consideration allows participants to deeply engage with the material, ensuring they emerge not just with new knowledge, but with actionable strategies that can be implemented immediately. This emphasis on reflection and application is a testament to their understanding that true learning requires time to digest, debate, and distill.
They bring research, practice, and experience to each session. Their backgrounds provide a wellspring of insights that enrich the learning experience, offering participants a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical wisdom. It is this combination of evidence-based practices and real-world application that makes their hybrid approach so effective.
